Fall 2019 Communications Intern Role Description

The Michael Blake for Congress campaign is seeking two bright, energetic and enthusiastic individuals to work in our communications department. Interns should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and should be able to commit to at least 10 hours per week in our campaign office in the South Bronx. 


  • An opportunity to work day to day with campaign staff who are passionate about advancing Michael Blake’s progressive candidacy

  • Receive first hand experience with the ins and outs of how congressional campaigns are run and how they function

  • Strengthen your understanding of the political process and prepare for future political opportunities

  • Cultivate meaningful skills while forming lasting connections

  • Receive college credit

Essential Duties

  • Working closely with Communications Director to support the campaign’s communications goals

  • Developing and managing press lists 

  • Conducting research into legislation, policy and more

  • Monitoring and reporting on media coverage for candidate and other relevant topics using Google Alerts

  • Drafting memos, briefing docs, emails and other collateral

  • Drafting social media content for candidate’s platforms; graphic design experience with Canva, PicMonkey, etc preferred 

  • Participating in brainstorming activities around various initiatives from a communications standpoint

  • Administrative support, as needed

Required + Preferred Skills 

  • Understanding/or and interest in politics and campaign work; previous work on a campaign is a bonus

  • Preference to candidates pursuing a degree within the realm of communications, marketing, policy and government; however other candidates are welcomed to apply

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Experience working with NGP or similar platforms

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with campaign staffers and leadership on ad-hoc projects

  • Comfortable working cross-functionally to support other campaign initiatives and departments including field 

  • Preference given to candidates with availability on occasional nights and weekends
